Cue Sheets

CUE SHEETS

First of all, what is a cue sheet? A cue sheet is a document that lists all of the musical elements of a television, film or radio program. Performance Rights Organizations such as ASCAP, BMI and SESAC use cue sheets to distribute performance royalties to artists.

Filling out a cue sheet costs you nothing. Broadcasters pay a fixed sum to Performance Rights Organizations for the right to broadcast music. You are legally required to fill out a que sheet if applicable to your project.

If Matchless music is used in a film or television program, it is imperative that a cue sheet is filed with the appropriate performance rights organization so that you artists will be paid any performance royalties generated from their compositions. Typically, the production company is responsible for doing this.

If you are producing a television, radio program or commercial, please fill out a cue sheet and submit it to the appropriate performance rights society —ASCAP, BMI or SESAC.

ASCAP’s website has some decent info on cue sheets.
